Maurice R. Ferré, M.D.

President
Chief Executive Officer
Chairman of the Board of Directors

Dr. Maurice R. Ferré is the founding President and Chief Executive Officer and current Chairman of the Board of Directors of MAKO Surgical Corp. In June 2007, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 award for emerging companies in Florida. In 1993, Dr. Ferré founded Visualization Technology, Inc., a medical device company for image-guided surgery, where he served as Chief Executive Officer until April 2002 when Visualization Technology was acquired by GE Healthcare, the healthcare division of the General Electric Company.

Dr. Ferré served as Vice President of Strategic Development for GE Navigation, a Division of GE Healthcare from April 2002 until April 2004. In May 2004, Dr. Ferré became the Chief Executive Officer of Z-KAT, Inc., a surgical navigation device company, which eventually spun-off the orthopedic robotics segment that became the basis for the founding of MAKO Surgical. He holds an M.D. and a Master’s degree in Public Health from Boston University.

 

Fritz L. LaPorte

Senior Vice President of Finance
Administration
Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

Fritz LaPorte, Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, has been with MAKO Surgical Corp. since its inception in November 2004. Beginning in 2001, Mr. LaPorte served as Chief Financial Officer of Z-KAT, Inc., a surgical navigation device company. Prior to joining Z-KAT, Mr. LaPorte served as the Director of Finance for Holy Cross Hospital, a 580-bed acute facility in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, from 1997 to 2000.

In addition, he also served as a Senior Auditor in the Healthcare Group of Ernst and Young LLP from 1993 to 1997. Mr. LaPorte received a B.B.A. degree in accounting from Florida Atlantic University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

 

Steven J. Nunes

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Steve Nunes, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, has been with MAKO Surgical Corp. since May 2006. In 2002, prior to joining MAKO, Mr. Nunes served as Director of Commercialization for GE Healthcare. In 1996, Mr. Nunes joined Visualization Technology, Inc., a medical device company for image-guided surgery. There he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing until April 2002, when Visualization Technology was acquired by GE Healthcare, the healthcare division of the General Electric Company.

In 1990, Mr. Nunes established SJN Medical Inc., an independent distributor for a wide range of surgical endoscopy products, where he served as President until the company was acquired in 1996. Mr. Nunes received a B.A. degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

 

Ivan Delevic

Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing
and Business Development

Ivan Delevic joined our company in April 2009. Beginning in 2007 through April 2009, Mr. Delevic was a business development consultant to medical device companies through ATID Group Inc. and IDAT LLC, companies he founded in 2007.

From 1996 to 2007, Mr. Delevic held various positions with General Electric’s healthcare division, both domestically and internationally, including as General Manager for Molecular Imaging EMEA, Global Marketing and Sales Manager for Surgical Navigation, Business Development Manager with GE Healthcare’s Global Business Development, Six Sigma Leader & Black Belt for Global Functional Imaging, and Sales Manager for Southeastern Europe. From 1992 to 1996, Mr. Delevic worked for Johnson & Johnson, Inc. as a Business Manager in Budapest, Hungary. Mr. Delevic holds a M.B.A. from the Technical University of Budapest through a joint program with Herriot-Watt University and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest.

 

Richard Leparmentier

Senior Vice President of Engineering

Richard Leparmentier, Senior Vice President of Engineering, has been with us since March 2010. From 2007 to 2010, Mr. Leparmentier served as U.S. VP of Design and Engineering for ASML, a Dutch lithography equipment company. From 1995 to 2006, Mr. Leparmentier held various positions with GE Healthcare, including Vice President of OEC-Surgery Engineering, a leader in surgical x-ray and navigation equipment, Engineering Manager for radiography products in China, and Lead System Designer for radiographic products in Buc, France. Mr. Leparmentier holds an Engineering Degree in Biology and Micromechanics from Ecole Polytechnique in France, an engineering degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Telécommunications in France, and an M.B.A. from NYU Stern School of Management.

 

Duncan H. Moffat

Senior Vice President of Operations

Duncan H. Moffat, Senior Vice President of Operations, has been with us since April 2008. From 2001 to 2008, Mr. Moffat served as VP of Operations for the nuclear medicine business of Philips Medical Systems, a worldwide manufacturer of medical imaging equipment. From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Moffat served as Vice President of Operations for Lumisys, a start-up company providing digital x-ray products that was sold to Eastman Kodak in 2001. Beginning in 1982, Mr. Moffat held various positions with the Lucas companies, first with two Lucas affiliates in England, followed by a position as project manager with Lucas Control Systems Products, Hampton, Virginia, and then by a position as Director of Operations with Lucas Deeco Systems, Hayward, California, from 1995 to1998. Mr. Moffat holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland.

 

Menashe R. Frank, Esq.

Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

Menashe Frank, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, has been with MAKO Surgical Corp. since its inception in November 2004. From July 2004 until the formation of MAKO Surgical Corp., Mr. Frank was a legal consultant to Z-KAT, Inc. Mr. Frank was previously a member of the corporate, securities and finance groups of Hogan & Hartson LLP, where he served as outside corporate counsel for Z-KAT, Inc., from 2001 to 2004.

Mr. Frank was a corporate associate at the law firm of Baker & McKenzie from 2000 to 2001. From 1998 to 2000, Mr. Frank served as Chief Legal Officer for Enticent.com, Inc., a marketing technology enterprise. He was an associate in the business finance and restructuring department of the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP from 1996 to 1998. Mr. Frank holds a B.A. in political science from American University and a J.D. from the University Of Miami School Of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude.

 

Lawrence T. Gibbons

Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs
& Quality Assurance

Lawrence T. Gibbons, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs & Quality Assurance, has been with us since February 2012.  From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Gibbons, held various positions with Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, a medical device manufacturer, including Managing Director, Mexico and Special Consultant to CEO, and was responsible for establishing a manufacturing facility in Mexico and establishing the quality system at the company’s New Zealand headquarters and manufacturing site. From 2006 to 2007, Mr. Gibbons served as Vice President of Quality/Regulatory, Atrial Fibrillation Division, of St. Jude Medical, a medical technology and services company. From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Gibbons served as Vice President of Quality Assurance of Baxter International, Inc., a global healthcare company, where he was responsible for leading the quality function and overseeing the implementation of the company´s various quality programs. Prior to joining Baxter, Mr. Gibbons was vice president of quality assurance and regulatory affairs for Tyco Healthcare. Mr. Gibbons spent more than 20 years in various quality and regulatory positions with increasing responsibility at Kendall Company, which was acquired by Tyco Healthcare in 1994. Prior to joining Kendall Company, Mr. Gibbons was an investigator with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration´s Boston District Office. Mr. Gibbons hold a B.S. in science from the University of Massachusetts.

 

Rony A. Abovitz

Chief Visionary Officer and Co-Founder

Rony Abovitz, Chief Visionary Officer and co-Founder, has been with MAKO Surgical Corp. since its inception in November 2004. Mr. Abovitz is responsible for leading the development of MAKO Surgical’s technology and product portfolio, including an IP portfolio of more than 240 patents held by the company. His background includes orthopedic and cardiovascular implant development, including involvement with medical robotics and computer-assisted technologies since 1995. Mr. Abovitz was also the co-founder of Z-KAT, Inc., a surgical navigation device company, which eventually spun-off the orthopedic robotics segment that became the basis for the founding of MAKO Surgical.

From its inception, Mr. Abovitz held various executive positions, including Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Abovitz worked as a research and development engineer for Lima Orthopedics, Inc. developing orthopedic implants. Mr. Abovitz was also named a 2005 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum for his work on computer-assisted technologies for minimally invasive surgery. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and a M.S. in biomedical engineering from the University of Miami.

Board of Directors

S. Morry Blumenfeld, Ph.D.

S. Morry Blumenfeld, Ph.D. has served as one of our directors since July 2005. In 2003, Mr. Blumenfeld founded Meditech Advisors LLC and Meditech Advisors Management LLC, a general partner of Ziegler Meditech Equity Partners, LP, a private equity fund specializing in investments in healthcare and medical device companies. In April 2002, in proxy, Mr. Blumenfeld retired as Managing Director of GE Medical Systems in Israel after 34 years with the company, where he initiated both GE’s CT and MR business lines. Currently, he serves on the board of directors of a number of medical device and technology companies, including Oridion Systems Ltd. and several private companies. Mr. Blumenfeld holds a B.A.Sc in Engineering Physics and Ph.D. in Molecular Physics from the University of Toronto.


Christopher C. Dewey

Christopher C. Dewey has served as one of our directors since our inception in November 2004. From January 2007 to April 2011, Mr. Dewey has served as Vice-Chairman of the board of directors of National Holdings Corporation, a financial services organization operating through its subsidiary, National Securities. From Decmeber 2006 to December 2008, Mr. Dewey served as acting Chief Executive Officer and director of Z-KAT, Inc. Mr. Dewey has over 25 years experience on Wall Street, most recently as Executive Vice President of Jefferies & Company, Inc. from 1994 to December 2006. Mr. Dewey co-founded several companies, including Robotic Ventures LLC, Bonds Direct Securities LLC and Cannon Group Inc., a motion picture company that went public in 1972. Mr. Dewey holds an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.


Charles W. Federico

Charles W. Federico has served as Independent Lead Director since June 2007. From 2001 to April 2006, Mr. Federico served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Orthofix International N.V. and; from 1996 to 2001, he served as President of Orthofix Inc. From 1985 to 1996, Mr. Federico was President of Smith & Nephew Endoscopy (formerly Dyonics, Inc.). From 1981 to 1985, Mr. Federico served as Vice President of Dyonics. Previously he held management and marketing positions with General Foods Corporation, Puritan Bennett Corporation and LSE Corporation. Mr. Federico is a Trustee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and a director of SRI/Surgical Express, Inc. and BioMimetic Therapeutics, Inc.. Mr. Federico holds a B.S. in marketing from Fordham University.


John G. Freund, M.D.

John G. Freund, M.D. has served as one of our directors since Oct. 2008. Dr. Freund has been a Managing Director of Skyline Ventures since 1997. Earlier in his career he held various positions at Acuson Corporation, a medical device company, including Executive Vice President. He was the co-founder of the Healthcare Group in the Corporate Finance Department of Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc., and was the original healthcare partner at Morgan Stanley Venture Partners. In 1995, Dr. Freund co-founded Intuitive Surgical, Inc., a medical device company, and served on Intuitive’s board of directors until March 2000. Dr. Freund also serves on the board of directors of XenoPort Inc., The Growth Fund of America, Inc., Fundamental Investors, Inc., and the SmallCap World Fund, as well as a number of private companies. He received an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1980 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1982, where he was a Baker Scholar.


Frederic H. Moll, M.D.

Frederic H. Moll, M.D. has served as one of our directors since August 2007. In September 2002, Mr. Moll co-founded Hansen Medical, Inc. and is currently serving as a director. In November 1995, Dr. Moll co-founded Intuitive Surgical Inc., a medical device company, and served as its first Chief Executive Officer and later, its Vice President and Medical Director until September 2003. In 1989, Dr. Moll co-founded Origin Medsystems, Inc., a medical device company, which later became an operating company within Guidant Corporation, a medical device company, following its acquisition by Eli Lilly in 1992. Dr. Moll served as Medical Director of Guidant’s surgical device division until November 1995. Dr. Moll holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.S. from Stanford University and an M.D. from the University of Washington School of Medicine.


Richard R. Pettingill

Richard R. Pettingill has served as one of our directors since August 2010. Mr. Pettingill has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Allina Hospitals and Clinics, Minnesota’s largest healthcare organization, from 2002 until his retirement in 2009. While in this role, he also served on the board of directors of the Minnesota Hospital Association and the Minnesota Business Partnership. Prior to joining Allina Hospitals and Clinics, Mr. Pettingill served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plans and Hospitals from 1996 to 2002. From 1991 to 1995, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Camino Healthcare, a community based integrated delivery system. Mr. Pettingill is a director and member of the health IT standards, compensation and quality, compliance and ethics committees of Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Mr. Pettingill received a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University and a master’s degree in health care administration from San Jose State University. He served as a 2010 Fellow in the Advanced Leadership Initiative program at Harvard University.


William D. Pruitt

William D. Pruitt has served as one of our directors since June 2008. Mr. Pruitt is the President of Pruitt Enterprises, LP. From 1980 to 1999, Mr. Pruitt was the Managing Partner for Arthur Andersen LLP’s Florida, Caribbean and Venezuela operations. During his career, Mr. Pruitt has served on the board of directors as a Chairman of the audit committee for several companies. Mr. Pruitt is curently a board member and chairman of Sisher Hygene, INc. and he served as a board member and chairman of the audit committee of The PBSJ Corporation. Mr. Pruitt served as chairman of the audit committee of KOS Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a fully integrated specialty pharmaceutical company until its sale in 2006. He was also chairman of the audit committee for Adjoined Consulting, Inc., a full-service management consulting firm, until it was merged into Kanbay International, a global consulting firm in February 2006. Mr. Pruitt has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Miami and is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive).


John J. Savarese, M.D.

John J. Savarese, M.D. has served as one of our directors since October 2008. Mr. Savarese is a Managing Director at Montreux Equity Partners. Dr. Savarese’s clinical training in Orthopedic and General Surgery was gained at The Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell University Medical Center. Dr. Savarese has worked in the Life Sciences divisions at Credit Suisse First Boston and Merrill Lynch and held management positions at NeurogesX. He received an M.D. from Duke University Medical School and M.B.A. from Stanford University.
